After being taken in in Elazig, we were in jail for 3 days. As Ian and Johnny were singing inside the cell, the jailer asked Ian to explain Who they were worshipping. Another occasion, 7 police detectives came to search our house, and arrested us. One time in Ankara, we worked through the night to get our foreign and Turkish team members free, after they got arrested. We called the embassies, and kept going to different police stations, because the team had been split up.That time, Yungeun led a prostitute to the Lord, while in jail. With Turks and foreign co-workers, we have traveled to at least 20 major cities all over Turkey, carrying New Testaments on the bus, and going to regular bookstores and second-hand sellers. We were arrested, harassed by the police and military – over 55 times.

We opened four legal book companies with other foreign co-workers and Turkish staff in four cities, through which New Testaments could be distributed. Nationals are trained to do evangelism, do follow-up, work in book fairs, answer the Prayer Hotlines, and to do street ministry. Turkish believers in our Dirilis church refer to Ian as “Baba”, which means “Dad” in Turkish. Our vision is to empower national believers, help and work together with Turkish churches. We have networked with at least 25 churches around the country, and partnered with different Christian organizations (TWO, Korean groups, WEC, YWAM, etc.), also helping with follow-up.

We opened up street bookstands in four different cities in many different locations. When the Ramadan month of fasting comes, everybody gets more religiously aggressive. We were able to keep our stand open the whole Ramadan month without any problems.

We receive grateful letters from professors and prison prosecutors – thanking us for the New Testaments and other Christian books that we donated. Going into Turkish prisons was an experience! Some Islamic seminaries began to order New Testaments from us every year to pass out to their students. We were about to leave the Yirmidokuz Eylul University campus after donating New Testaments to the head librarian. Our team was immediately surrounded by about 10 plainclothes police, and held for interrogation. When the chief of police came to investigate us, we were finally released!
